GETTING TO THE TOWN HOME FROM MONGOMERY

Honestly, this is my preferred route to get to the townhome from Montgomery. I have alwalys been one to take the Interstate instead of two lane roads. However, this is one of my "world-famous" short cuts that has actually worked for me. I have rarely passed more than five vehicles in this last three hours of driving, the towns are few (slow down in the towns though or you will get a ticket from "Barney.") There are very few turns, most of the way is directly south and there are almost NO TRUCKS!

The easiest, least tricky way is to get on Hwy 331 south out of Montgomery and follow it all the way to Hwy 98 near our townhome. Just south of Brantley, however, there is yet another short cut to the short cut I will tell you about in a little bit which saves even more time and less traffic. If you stay on 331 all the way in, you also go through Opp and Florala on your way to Defuniak Springs. That keeps you from having to change a few numbered highways on your route, but it is a little bit longer. I'll tell you about the short, short cut in a minute. Back to Montgomery and how to get on 331.

Just on the south side of Montgomery, AL is an exit that leads to US 80E at the TA Travel Center. You take US80 East for about half a mile before you come to and turn right onto US 331 South. The first 15 miles of this road is divided four lane as good as the interstate, with the exception that there are NO TRUCKS! (You can tell I don't like trucks) As I said before, you can stay on US 331 all the way to the Gulf shore and Hwy 98 if you like.

Going south on US 331 you will go through three small towns, Highland Home, Luverne and Brantley. Watch for the F16 at the Highland Home High School. Luverne, or Loooovern as I prefer to call it, has a McDonalds (good bathroom stop) and several other stores for whatever you need. Brantley is just a few miles further down the road and your decision point. At Brantley, you are only 100 miles from the townhome. Just south of Brantley, you can either stay on US331 all the way through Opp and Florala to Defuniak Springs, or you can take Hwy 141 to the left. When I first drove this route, I came up to the Hwy 141 turnoff and the GPS told me to go that way. Not one to shy from a challenge, I took the left turn. As I progressed along the route following the GPS, I noted that this shortcut helped me avoid those other two towns and was a more directly south route. I reckon it saves at least five miles and probably ten minutes. Plus less traffic and two less towns. So, if you are up for the challenge, click here:

If you decide that staying on 331 is your plan instead of turning onto Hwy 141, click here to continue on your route, but view Hwy 331 on the maps that follow instead of the Short Short cut. Let me know how that works out, since I have never gone that way.
