I dedicate this book to my brother, Dan Matthews. Born just one year after me, Dan and I grew up together in a pastor’s home with the unconditional love of a devoted mother and father. We fought like brothers fought, but also learned to love the Lord, our family, our church and the world around us. How five brothers could fight like cats and dogs but still learn to love and defend each other and the family is a great example of God’s grace.
Dan was one of my biggest fans in life, and I was one of his! He supported me in sports, he campaigned for me for Band Captain, he prayed and supported me at the Air Force Academy and throughout my adult life. We only grew closer as we got older. There was never anything Dan wouldn’t do for me if I asked.
As we grew older, most often living in places far apart, we always stayed close as we loved our wives, raised our kids and always held the Lord and family at the top of our priorities.
Dan demonstrates exemplary Christian qualities throughout his life, caring for widows, visiting the needy, many times taking care of everyone else’s needs before his own. He has certainly demonstrated a Christ-like spirit to me and everyone around him…a great example of “Jesus in the flesh.” Thanks Dan!
