Political Candidates
GOP Campaign Guide

You Can't Run if You Don't Register!  Every candidate at the local level must register to run by the deadline with the Floyd County Clerk.  Her office is on the second floor of the City/County Building in New Albany.  The deadline is determined by Indiana Law and usually opens the second Wednesday in January (near or on January 11th) and closes the second Friday in February (Feb 10th) AT NOON.

You need to take with you a completed registration form not later than the noon deadline noted above.

Click here to download a CAN-2 Registration form now.

Make sure you fill out this form completely. There is a location where you can identify any nicknames you may want to use. Make sure you indicate exactly how you want your name to appear as this will be how it is displayed on the ballot. Also, do not forget to fill out the information on the second page. It is campaign finance information and it is very important. The clerk will not register the form until you have filled it out. There are a couple of questions regarding whether or not you have run for office before and your statement that you are aware of the provisions of Indiana Code 3-9 and that you agree to comply with those. You are not required to know every aspect of the Code but you are responsible for complying with its requirements....this is the law of elections. So, a brief reading of the code would be beneficial and you will be required to follow the law. This code is readily accessible on the internet and you can read and/or download it by going to the following website:

***********************

After you sign your name, there is a place for a notary to notarize your form. The County Clerk can do this for you when you register. You do not need to pay a notary to do this ahead of time. Also, there is a statement right below your signature about campaign finance. If you have already been raising money for your campaign, you may need to have already filed a campaign finance form. By signing, you are stating that you have either done so or as a candidate you know that you will need to meet all campaign finance requirements. We will discuss that issue in a few minutes. Bottom line: Make sure you sign up to run before the deadline and my advice is to not wait until noon of the final day. You might not make it. Sign up early. Run hard!

Next, let's talk about committees.
