2011 Floyd County GOP Volunteer of the Year
BRUCE PELHAM
Bruce Pelham has been a fixture in the Floyd County Republican Party for decades. Bruce is so tall, he is always hard to miss in any crowd. His quiet, soft spoken demeanor, however, gives him away if you have missed him in any other way. Seriously, if you have been around Bruce for any length of time, you have come to know him as a well-spoken man who is never afraid to share his views.
Bruce was a US Navy Veteran in the Korean War. After his military service, he started his life work as a data processor/programmer at the Signal Depot in Avon, Kentucky. Bruce worked back in the days when they still used punch cards and huge room-size processors. Some of you can remember those “beasts.” He also worked repossessing cars, in a bank and for a trucking company.
Bruce is 76 years old and has been married to his lovely wife Edith for most of those. He first got involved in political life helping Bob Real in his Mayor’s race and administration. He has been a member of the Masonic Lodge since 1968 and has been a Precinct Committeeman in Floyd County since 1985. Bruce has been on the Traveling Board during elections, worked the Absentee Voter position in the Clerk’s Office and has helped in so many candidates’ campaigns that he has lost count.
Bruce describes himself as “Conservative to the Bone” and I can attest to that by the many emails he forwards to me. Bruce brags that he has never drawn unemployment. And I can testify that his house in a very prominent location on US Highway 150 is always one of the most visible and desirable location for candidates’ campaign signs…..and he always has the Republican ones displayed.
During several campaign seasons, Bruce could be seen driving an old beat up pickup truck around the County with Candidates’ signs displayed in huge banner style. Bruce is one of those God-loving, flag-waving, gun-toting Conservatives who still make up the backbone of our nation. He’s a man who has “been there and done it all” for the Republican Party.
For these reasons and many more I probably haven’t even mentioned, I can think of no one more fitting for us to recognize this year as our 2011 Floyd County GOP Volunteer of the Year. BRUCE PELHAM.
