Floyd County Republican Party leaders unanimously chose David Matthews to replace James Hancock as party chairman at a meeting Saturday.
“We’ve got a full plate,” Matthews said. “We’re looking forward to a good campaign season through November for our Republican candidates.”

Asked whether the party is considering supporting independent candidates in the District 1 and District 3 City Council races, which no Republican entered, Matthews replied, “We’re still discussing that. We hate to just give the Democrats a free pass in those two districts.”

Matthews, 52, a UPS pilot and 23-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force, is a former eight-year member of the Greenville Town Board. An 11-year resident of Floyd County, Matthews lives with his wife and children in Floyds Knobs.
